During its December 7 meeting, the Holy Synod of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church made a series of important decisions concerning the upcoming “Council of Unification” with the schismatics, convened by the Patriarchate of Constantinople for the creation of the Orthodox autocephalous Church in Ukraine. The Synod declared that Patriarch Bartholomew of Constantinople has no canonical right to convene any meeting in Ukraine and to invite the hierarchs of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church. The Synod called the planned “council” an illegal meeting, and once again reminded its faithful that the representatives of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church do not have the blessing to participate.
The Synod expressed its concern about the numerous cases of pressure made on the bishops of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church in order for them to take part in the “Council of Unification”, which “constitutes a direct incitement to violate the episcopal oath that bishops must keep, even in case of death threats”.
The Synod drew attention to the fact that the Ukrainian Orthodox Church did not empower any of its hierarchs, clerics, monks and lay people, to represent the Ukrainian Orthodox Church at the so-called “Council of Unification”.
All decisions made at this meeting will be considered as invalid for the Ukrainian Orthodox Church, as they will have no legal and canonical value, concluded the Holy Synod of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church.
