Archimandrite Ephrem, the hegumen of the Athonite Vatopedi Monastery, was hospitalized in a Kyiv clinic following a heart attack that occurred on Friday afternoon, February 1st. Archimandrite Ephrem is in Ukraine with the Constantinople Patriarchate delegation. Patriarch Bartholomew appointed him to be part of it for the enthronement of Metropolitan Epifaniy, the primate of the new autocephalous Ukrainian Church.
After his flight from Istanbul to Kyiv, Archimandrite Ephrem felt a strong discomfort. Immediately after his arrival, as his condition worsened, he was sent to a Kyiv clinic, where the doctors diagnosed a heart attack. First aid was provided to him and he was immediately hospitalized. Due to his past serious heart issues and his diabetes, the anxiety is great, especially since the abbot recently underwent a stent procedure. He is currently being monitored by the doctors.
