According to the Romfea agency, it seems that the Orthodox Church of Georgia will recognize the new Autocephalous Church of Ukraine. The Holy Synod of the Georgia Patriarchate met in Tbilisi on Thursday, December 27, under the chairmanship of Patriarch Ilia II. According to Metropolitan Zosime of Tsilkani and Dusheti, the Georgian Holy Synod positively considers autocephaly in Ukraine.
“The Georgian Church supports autocephaly,” he declared, answering journalists’ questions about the Church of Georgia’s position on autocephaly in Ukraine. However, still according to Metropolitan Zosime, the final decision of the Georgian Church will not be made until January, when the Ecumenical Patriarchate delivers the tomos to the new Church. According to Romfea, there are opinions in favor of but also against Ukrainian autocephaly in the Georgian Church Holy Synod. As a result, no official decision has yet been made on this issue.
