“The Georgian Orthodox Church must not hasten to recognize the autocephalous Orthodox Church in Ukraine”, told Metropolitan Nicholas of Akhalkalaki and Kumurdo to the Georgian news agency Interpressnews.

Metropolitan Nicholas considers that the Churches placed in the diptychs before the Georgian Church are the ones that must take up this challenge of the recognition [of the OCU – Translator’s Note]. He added, “It is necessary to take into account the specifics of the implementation of the autocephaly, in particular, who should be head of the Ukrainian Church and who will the clerics be. It is very important to establish their canonicity. Some of them have been anathematized. This was recognized by all the Orthodox Churches, including that of Constantinople”.

The Metropolitan added that “many among them [i.e. among the new autocephalous Church] are self-proclaimed bishops! How can all this coexist? We cannot recognize such people”.

The hierarch of the Georgian Church also mentioned that the Holy Synod has yet to study in detail the tomos received by Ukraine, adding that the procedure of recognition is long and complex. He highlighted that it is “necessary to look at the original text, and not at the translation” of the tomos.

Metropolitan Nicholas of Akhalkalaki and Kumurdo concluded, “Ukraine is a strategic partner of Georgia, whereas Russia has occupied 20% of the Georgian territory. Georgian citizens fully support Ukraine, but if we fully support autocephaly, it would negatively impact our relationships with other Orthodox churches”.
