On June 24, Metropolitan Amfilohije of Montenegro and the Littoral met with Archbishop Yevstratiy (Zoria) of the new autocephalous Church of Ukraine, which caused the astonishment of the hierarchy of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church (under Metropolitan Onufriy of Kyiv).
On July 17, the latter received a letter from Metropolitan Amfilohije, which clarifies the causes of this meeting. The Department for External Church Relations of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church published the facsimile of this letter, which we translate here in full:

“To His Beatitude, most Blessed Onufriy, Metropolitan of Kyiv and All Ukraine, the Primate of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church

Your Beatitude,

Dear brother in Christ,

I take this opportunity to thank you for your blessings, which were conveyed to us by His Eminence Sergei, Metropolitan of Ternopol and Kremenets who, on your behalf, participated last May in the solemnities for the celebration of the memory of St. Basil of Ostrog.
We hope that the Lord will make us worthy also to meet Your Beatitude and to receive communion with you, here in the Montenegrin soil sanctified by Saint Sava, Saint Basil, Saint Peter, and other saints of the Serbian people.
I would also like to inform you of the recent meeting at the Metropolitan Residence in Cetinje, at the request and at the initiative of the representatives of the “Orthodox Church of Ukraine”, and under the influence of the Patriarch of Constantinople.
We complained to the Patriarch of Constantinople and expressed our concern about the concelebration of Metropolitan Emmanuel of France with the representative of the “Montenegrin Orthodox Church, Archimandrite Boris Bojović” on May 25, 2019 in Kyiv. The danger existed that the representatives of the “Orthodox Church of Ukraine”, recognized by the Patriarchate of Constantinople, would participate “in the episcopal coronation of Archimandrite Boris” in Cetinje, as expected by the representatives of the Montenegrin power.
The patriarch of Constantinople recommended Epifaniy Dumenko [primate of the new Orthodox Church of Ukraine, TN] to apologize for the mistake. Metropolitan Emmanuel of France also apologized, and wrote in his letter that he did not know he had concelebrated with him.
It must be added that in the past, Epifaniy Dumenko came to Montenegro in the company of Filaret Denisenko [“Patriarch of Kyiv”], and the latter was in communion with Miraš Dedeić [head of the schismatic group calling itself “the Montenegrin Orthodox Church].
Yevstratiy Zoria, as a representative of the “Orthodox Church of Ukraine”, brought a letter written by Epifaniy Dumenko to the Metropolitanate of Montenegrin and the Littoral. In it, he explains “the concelebration of the clergy of the Orthodox Church of Ukraine” with “archimandrite Boris Bojović, a member of the Montenegrin Orthodox Church clergy” in Kyiv last May. Excerpts from this letter concerning this event have been published on the website of the Montenegrin Metropolitanate. The meeting with the representative of the “Orthodox Church of Ukraine” was not reported in the media.

In a private interview with him, we reiterated the unchanging position of the Assembly of Bishops of the Serbian Orthodox Church, namely, that the Church problems in Ukraine can only be resolved at a Pan-Orthodox Council, which all the Orthodox Churches have called for during the year 2018. It is also mentioned in the first paragraph of the declaration adopted at the session of the Holy Synod of the Russian Orthodox Church in Minsk on October 15, 2018. And only with the participation of the Russian Orthodox Church and the canonical hierarchy of Ukraine with Your Beatitude at its head.

Your Beatitude, you know that this position is also our personal position, which we have written to you about on several occasions. We also pointed out, whatever the “Orthodox Church of Ukraine” may think about it, that the Russian Orthodox Church is the mother church of the Orthodox people of Ukraine.
Also in written form, we have personally informed His Holiness Patriarch Irinej of the recent meeting, as well as the members of the Holy Synod of the Serbian Orthodox Church, at its June 26, 2019 session in Belgrade.

With love in Jesus Christ,

+ Amfilohije, Archbishop of Cetinje, Metropolitan of Montenegro and the Littoral”
