Metropolitan Athenagoras of Belgium (Ecumenical Patriarchate) gave a speech at the conference held at the European Parliament’s headquarters in Brussels on February 21, entitled “The role of the Ecumenical Patriarchate in the Orthodox Church and Europe today”.
The event was organized in collaboration with Manolis Kefaloyiannis, the MEP for the European People’s Party (Christian Democrats), and the metropolitan diocese of Belgium (Ecumenical Patriarchate). The keynote speaker was Metropolitan Bartholomew of Smyrna, who was then present in Brussels.
In his address, Metropolitan Athenagoras said, “This event tonight is an opportunity to express our support for the Mother Church, our Ecumenical Patriarchate, which always acts and works with the criteria of the good and unity of our Church. The Ecumenical Patriarchate has never done anything towards division and the disintegration of Orthodox unity… The unity of our Church is tested today. We have experienced similar trials in many phases of ecclesiastical history, and they were finally overcome with the help of God. Our Ecumenical Patriarchate, on the basis of the rights that the tradition and history of our Church has bequeathed to it, has taken the same initiative for so many other Churches, sister and daughter Churches. Why should it not have done it for the Ukrainian Church?…”
