Archbishop Daniel Pamphilon and Bishop Hilarion of Edmonton, Ecumenical Patriarchate exarchs, met with Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko on Tuesday, October 16.
“We came back from the Phanar to continue our work. It is now in its final stage. Next step will be the Assembly of Bishops for the election of the head of the Autocephalous Church, and then the presentation of the final document for the Tomos of autocephaly, ” explained Archbishop Daniel Pamphilon.
He said the exarchs were ready to collaborate with the heads of the “Churches” in Ukraine, including the hierarchs of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the Moscow Patriarchate.
Archbishop Daniel conveyed the Ecumenical Patriarch’s greetings to President Poroshenko, as well as his gratitude for the efforts made by Mr Poroshenko throughout the process, with the aim of unifying all Orthodox Christians in Ukraine.
“I believe I am not mistaken if I say this is a historic decision of the Mother Church regarding Ukraine,” said Archbishop Daniel. For his part, the Bishop of Edmonton added that “The Ecumenical Patriarchate, as a good pastor, left the 99 sheep and made his October 11 decision in order to find the lost sheep and unite the millions of Orthodox Christians who have completed this sacrificial journey towards Golgotha. The Ecumenical Patriarchate continued on this journey and acted against his own interests, as the Mother Church for the future of her children”.
Finally, President Poroshenko thanked the Holy Synod of the Ecumenical Patriarchate for its decision, highlighting that “the effort of the Mother Church, as opposed to the attempts of those who obstruct our unity, shows us the great value of the Ecumenical Patriarchate and of the Mother Church”.
