On November 29 in Paris, after the symposium devoted to Vladimir Lossky’s theological inheritance, Metropolitan Hilarion (Alfeyev) of Volokolamsk, the chairman of the Moscow Patriarchate department for External Church Relations and the rector of the Sts Cyril and Methodius Church Post-Graduate and Doctoral School, presented his book The Architecture, Icons and Music of the Orthodox Church, published in 2017 in French translation.
This book is the third volume (published in English in 2014) of a series presenting various aspects of the Orthodox Church:
- The History and Canonical Structure of the Orthodox Church (Volume I)
- Doctrine and Teaching of the Orthodox Church (Volume II)
- The Worship and Liturgical Life of the Orthodox Church (Volume IV), is not yet available in French translation.
The book is well documented, it contains many illustrations and examples of Orthodox spiritual art. The sense of beauty is indeed inseparable from Christian spiritual life, as it is through beauty that we come to the knowledge of God and to communion with Him. Orthodox spirituality, especially Russian Orthodox spirituality, intimately links faith to art.
His presentation was followed by the concert of two orthodox vocal ensembles, featuring Nativity liturgical works and an oratorio composed by Metropolitan Hilarion himself.
