An interactive map was published on the internet, showing the parishes of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church (under Metropolitan Onufriy of Kyiv’s jurisdiction), which were seized by the new autocephalous Church. The presentation of this initiative took place at a press conference held at the Kyiv Lavra on March 26, 2019.
The map was prepared by the legal department of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church, based on Google Maps. At present, 62 parishes, forcibly taken over by supporters of the new autocephalous Church, appear on the map.
“The map is published on the official website of the Legal Department, and exactly reflects the actual statistics of the churches seized on the territory of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church. As you can see, the majority of seized parishes occur in western Ukraine, in the Volyn, Rivne, and Zhitomir regions. By clicking on the icon, you have access to a brief description of the events that happened before the parish was seized,” explained Archpriest Alexander Bakhov, the President of the Legal Department of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church, who presented the project to journalists.
As the priest pointed out, this information has been gathered in the framework of the monitoring of the violations of the rights of the faithful of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church. The monitoring is being done by the Legal Department, with the blessing of the Holy Synod of this Church.
